After reading Anthropology and Theology, Patrick worked as a probation officer and then as a family caseworker (in the East End). He subsequently trained as a psychotherapist and later as a psychoanalyst. He wrote four books, the first two of which -- On Learning from the Patient (1985) and Further Learning from the Patient (1991) -- have been selected by Routledge to launch their new series "Classics in Mental Health". His third book, Learning from our Mistakes (2002) received a Gradiva award in the US for its contribution to Psychoanalysis. His last book, written after he retired, is Learning from Life (2006), which is partly autobiographical. Patrick has recently survived an aggressive cancer and approaches each day with a renewed passion for life.
